Korean Soul (HPM Productions)
It was the only gospel choir in Seoul, Korea that brought three young men together – SOOYONG YOON, SEUNG HYUN LEE, JIHWAN LEE. Ten years later YOUNGJIN JANG would join the same choir and be introduced to the other guys by a choir member who thought they should meet.
The four became fast friends and began posting videos on Instagram singing their favorite Gospel tunes they learned in the choir or through their research of the Gospel icons like BeBe Winans.
But it was fate that would lead Grammy Award-winning artist, songwriter and producer, Donald Lawrence, to bring the young men to BeBe’s attention. It so happened that BeBe was looking for another group to join him on one of the singles on his forthcoming album when his schedule did not align with Boys II Men. But when Winans messaged Sooyong, he initially did not believe it was THE BeBe Winans reaching out! They eventually connected virtually and in 2018, he invited them to record vocals for “Laughter: Just Like a Medicine,” and send them back to him in the states. Soon after BeBe flew to South Korea to record the music video for the song and meet the young men for the first time. From that moment it became BeBe’s mission to bring their talents to the world. After being disappointed, just like all artists in some part of their journey, they took a leap of faith with BeBe. It was BeBe and his business partner Ron Gillyard, who suggested they officially become a group and they dubbed them KOREAN SOUL.
By the summer of 2019, they flew to America and had their very first performance ever as KOREAN SOUL on the GMA offshoot, “Strahan and Sara,” which was also their American TV debut!
The pandemic couldn’t stop their momentum and in 2020 they made history as the first Korean group to be nominated for an NAACP Image Award when “Laughter” was nominated for Outstanding Gospel/Christian Album (Traditional or Contemporary). 2021 is also set to be just as big of a year for KOREAN SOUL. In January, Bernice King asked them sing for the “2021 Martin Luther King, Jr. Beloved Community Commemorative Service” and soon they are set to go to greater heights as they prepared to compete on one of TV’s biggest competition shows, “America’s Got Talent.”
With hope in their hearts and dreams not yet realized, these four guys are ready to capture the world.
